No, seriously. Wow.

When I started writing the first book in the series, which was just titled Rag & Bone, it was back in very early 2019. Like January, just after the new year started 2019. It was supposed to be a stand alone story about a boy and his dog trying to make it in a world that had fallen to pieces. I could not have imagined then that COVID would soon be part of our lives, pushing back my desire to publish the story that was then titled Rag and Bone as the world was living what I had written.

Eventually lockdown came, and with it the desire to create more. I went back to the story, edited it, and realized it felt incomplete. I started working on book two, setting it as a way to tell the story from another point of view. Enter Sarah and Trey, two slightly younger teens from an entire different part of the country.

I realized then that I wanted to tie these stories together, culminating in a plot coming together for book three. I release book one, Transmission, in September of 2021. It did well, so I pushed on to release book two, Ashes, earlier this year. Now here we are with Genesis in the hands of readers, and I feel proud of myself. That isn’t something that happens often, I’m often frustrated or upset with my work, but not this time.

This time I created something for myself. I dipped my toes into the genres I love most (horror, thriller, and a hint of the mysterious and dystopian) and the feeling of writing it gave me real pleasure. Piecing out the bad guys and moments, sorting out their struggles, putting it all together just felt genuinely good and I was glad that I wrote something that gave me all those feelings.

It’s not that I haven’t enjoyed the other books I’ve written. I have, very much so, but this was different. Writing Transmission made me feel like I could be a horror writer, and once I started I haven’t looked back. These books have taken me to where I have always wanted to be as an author, and for that I am thankful.

I hope that you enjoyed this journey, and who knows. Just maybe we’ll see Avery in the future!
